Hi, I’m Joanie. I write and I cook.
Cooking has been part of my life since I was old enough to climb up on a chair and help to stir a pot.
Travelling has influenced what I eat and how I write. I’ve found myself in the kitchens and communal ovens of Moroccan Berbers in the Sahara. I’ve squatted on the floor over a kitchen fire in a leprosy colony in India set up by Gandhi and learned to make chapattis.
Urban life can make it easy to become disconnected from the cycle of the seasons. What I learned from my travels is that local, seasonal, simple cooking is a good way to stay close.
In this little corner of the internet, I share recipes and food stories from my home base in the north west of England and occasionally from wanderings beyond it.
In a previous life, I was an artist and designer and I write about art for Art in Liverpool and The State of the Arts.
